Taxonomy

The image-taxonomy repository is a classification scheme for historical visualizations in the OldVis dataset. It was developed by qualitative coding: images were grouped into taxa, then the groups were refined.

The scheme is hierarchical. A chart can sit under a broad type and then under a more specific form. Examples include bar charts (grouped, pictogram, stacked), line charts, pie charts, area charts, node-link diagrams, Sankey diagrams, and timelines.

The current scheme is shown below.

Definitions of the taxa are in the repository's definitions.md. The methodology and findings are in the paper VisTaxa. Labeling tools that work with this scheme are described on Image Taxonomy Labeler.
